STEVE'S BIRTHDAY - 23RD APRIL

The birthday page has been launched to mark the occasion this week which can be accessed by clicking HERE or via the link on the Welcome Page. It's much the same as last years' birthday page as I liked it but this year a couple of extras have been added. Happy Birthday Steve...

MOJO SEPTEMBER 2007 - DEF FEATURE!
In the September issue of Mojo Magazine there's a 7-page feature article about the Hysteria album and the trials the band were faced with during the making of the multi-platinum masterpiece. There are some cool images featuring Steve and a nice little passage about bands who influenced the album including none other than Led Zeppelin:
Def Leppard's name was styled on Led Zeppelin's, right down to the poor spelling. And Leppard guitarist Steve Clark worshipped Jimmy Page, even wearing his guitar strap a few notches too low to replicate Page's on-stage slouch. "Steve had this really cool Zeppelin thing going," says fellow guitarist Phil Collen. "He'd come up with these left-field riffs that would sound really dramatic - not metal, not cliched, but really intense and deep."
KEY HYSTERIA TRACK: Gods Of War - Steve Clark's riff-heavy pacifist paean. "It was Steve's baby. We finally got him his Kashmir," says Joe Elliott.
No wonder it was the finest track on the record!

RARE STEVE INTERVIEW FROM 1984!
There's a great new addition to the site today in the shape of a rare and interesting interview with Steve from Japan which originally took place in early 1984. You can jump straight to the page by clicking here or you can access it via the Articles & Info section or the Pyromania Tour Gear page in Steve's Gear section. Steve discusses (and demonstrates to the interviewer) many of the songs on Pyromania, gives his opinion on "flashy fast playing", has some sound advice for the learning guitarists and even hints at what other producer he'd have liked to work with.
Also updated in conjunction with the addition of this interview is the Pyromania Tour Gear page which has some new images of Steve's guitars and some added information. Be sure to check it all out.
17th January 2007:

8TH JANUARY - 16 YEARS ANNIVERSARY
As the 8th January looms upon us once again fans and friends of Steve Clark will take a moment to remember The Great Man at this difficult time. Instead of putting up the anniversary page here at the site to mark the day which has been done in previous years, this year I've just decided to place a regular update on the site for fans and would like to encourage people to remember the brilliance of Steve, how happy he made us all, his energy and ability with a guitar, his unique musical talent and his gentleness and wonderful sense of humour and that dazzling smile.
Steve, you will never be forgotten. You always will be better than the best.
STEVE'S GEAR - EARLY YEARS TO HIGH 'N' DRY TOUR:
Another section has been added to Steve's Gear to provide details of the main guitars that Steve used for the bands first concerts and tours from the beginning through to the High 'n' Dry tour. You can access the page directly by clicking here or you can select the page from the option on the main Gear page.

9th October 2006:
MARIAH CAREY IS A STEVE CLARK FAN TOO!
I discovered this interesting piece of information today:
‘One Sweet Day’
Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men
This song was inspired by the death of Mariah’s “Guitar Legend,” Def Leppard guitarist Steve Clark, in 1991. While brainstorming with Boyz II Men on a possible collaboration, the diva discovered that the group had written a tribute to their manager who was murdered while they were on tour. Her song plus theirs became “One Sweet Day.”
Thanks to a friend who passed on this link where you can read the full article from the Philippine Daily Enquirer.
This would quite possibly be a good part of the reason why Mariah decided to do a cover of one of Steve's classic masterpieces "Bringin' On The Heartbreak".
The lyrics of Mariah's song "One Sweet Day" are located on the dedication page of this website which had been placed there long before the website owner knew that Mariah was a big fan of Steve.
- "One Sweet Day" lyrics by Mariah Carey.
24th September 2006:
STEVE ON REHEARSING:
A new addition has been added to the Articles & Info section of the site; an interview from 1986. Steve tells Guitar FTPM some of the ways in which he and his band mates worked themselves hard in the early days in order to become a tight sounding band. Read it all and get some tips from The Guitar King himself by clicking here or you can access the article anytime from the Articles & Info page.
19th September 2006:
STEVE ON GUITARSITE.COM:
I subscribe to the newsletter at Guitarsite.com which is in my opinion one of the finest web resource centres out there for guitar fans, guitarists and musicians. There was a topic featured in this latest newsletter on some of the most underrated guitar players and our Steve gets a shout. Check out what is written about him by clicking here to go straight to the piece by Kenny Auyoung. It's a plain fact that Clark is indeed one of the most underrated guitar musicians this world will ever see. As far as I am concerned he's better than the best.

THE RETURN OF KAHLER VIBRATO/TREMOLO SYSTEMS!

Yes, it's true. Kahler have made a comeback with their vibrato system for the guitar which was hugely popular in the eighties. They have launched new websites Kahler USA and Kahler Parts where you can buy complete new vibrato systems for your guitar or bass; as well as parts, partial assemblies and repair kits. I had a browse at their site and discovered that the Kahler 2200 series studmount trem unit, (which is the model Steve had fitted to some of his Gibsons), is making it's return in 2006!
Make sure you stop by for a look!
19th May 2005:
NEW PHIL COLLEN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW AT CLASSIC ROCK REVISITED:
Classic Rock Revisited website have a new and exclusive interview with Phil Collen featured just now. Phil Collen was Steve's Terror Twin way back in their Leppard days together. It's a very good interview with Collen. He talks about his new band project "Man-Raze" , the latest Def Leppard release, 'Rock Of Ages' collection and he also talks a bit about Steve and how he considered quitting Leppard after the loss of The Great Man. Click here for the interview.

STEVE'S BIRTHDAY - APRIL 23RD:
This Saturday April 23rd is Steve's birthday. He would be 45 this year. And Steve is greatly missed each and every day by his fans and admirers around the globe. Please check out Steve's birthday page here at the site and remember the great man.
Phil Collen adorns the front cover of the May 2005 issue of Guitar Techniques which has recently hit the shelves in the UK and there is a transcription of "Animal" inside. The most interesting point I found from the whole feature was a little segment that the writer/magazine call Best Bit. In it they say: ""Although we love the catchy intro riff and the crochet triplet-infused solo, the real killer is the unique modulation into the chorus. The verse is based in B flat, but the chorus goes up a semitone to B. Although unrelated the shift is made a little easier via the ascending chord voicings G minor-F/A-B. Genius!"
Indeed! This statement is just one example of the unique work of the musical genius Steve Clark.
20th March 2005:
At last I have finally managed to get the "My Guitars" page updated to show my complete collection of six strings. Check out the latest photos. All I need to do now is get really good at playing them, lol. ;-)
31st January 2005:
There are two new additions added to the "Speaking Of Steve" page. Two segments from a certain Mr Phil Collen. Check out what he says about his Terror Twin.
Also, from an online column by Clinton Devereaux this month, Clinton gives the lowdown on the history of Def Leppard and questions the omission of this band from the Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame. And when you sit back and reflect on what Steve and co. achived in their career, you have to wonder why too...

101 UNSUNG GUITAR HEROES:
In the October 2004 issue of UK's Guitarist magazine they have listed a readers poll of 101 Unsing Guitar Heroes and Mr Steve Clark is featured in the list. And rightly so. (Our Clarkie is a God!) Nobody has been allocated a number; it's just a list of 101 names whom I would assume received the most votes. Here's what is said about our Steve:
"Unsung as much as a songwriter as a player, the hard-living Clark lent early Leppard some great riffs as well as punchy, economical solos. He tragically died in 1991, aged just 30.
Guitarist pick: Pyromania (1983)
You say:'Always melodic, and packed with feel and tone. Def Leppard lost their edge when he was gone.' Jonathan Bradbeer"
3rd October 2004:

ROCKMAN RETURNS:
Interesting piece of news about the famous Tom Scholz Rockman unit in the September 2004 issue of Guitarist magazine:-
One of the most famous names in guitar processing is set to return! Readers may remember the Rockman unit, launched by Tom Scholz of Boston fame, which became an industry standard unit throughout the 1980s. The new Rockman Ace headphone amplifiers feature built-in compression, volume controls and auxilliary stereo connections. The unit can also be used as an onstage preamp.
The Rockman Guitar Ace offers pristine clean, crunch and heavy distortion sounds, while the Rockman Metal Ace offers more distortion and bite and the Rockman Bass Ace offers selectable treble and mid boost. All three retail at £89.99. The optional interconnection cable kit facilitates a myriad of direct recording options.
(Info and photo from Guitarist magazine Sept 2004 issue)
Of course back in the mid-80s when Steve was working on the recording of Hysteria, he and Phil [Collen] used Rockmans in the studio for a distinctive sound for certain parts. It is believed that one of the models used by Steve and Phil was the X100.

For Def Leppard, this is their second Diamond award; when the award was introduced in 1999, "HYSTERIA" already received it for 12 million US sales. (News from Def Leppard.com)
Wing Commander Steve played an immense role in the creation and success of "Pyromania" and "Hysteria". Thank you Steve... Our Guitar King.

6th March 2004:
Justin Hawkins of The Darkness - "A bona fide Les Paul fanatic..."
The Darkness frontmanand guitarist Justin Hawkins has some nice words to say about Gibson Guitars. "You realize there's a quality leap between any other guitar and Gibson, which is the top," he explains. "I've never got into Fenders - even though some of their designs look cool, they're a bit too twangy and bit too country, and they really don't have the balls the Les Paul facilitates. Another thing about the Les Paul is the carpentry involved - somebody spent a long time crafting those babies, and it's an honor and a privilege to pick up a piece of wood that's been manipulated in that way."
This article snippet wastaken from the December 2003 edition of The Gibson & Baldwin Player. To read the full article from Justin Hawkins click here.
21st February 2004:
A bit of info for you on the Pyrographic DVD that was released this month. I have received my copy and watched it and it's alright. There is, however no images or footage of Steve Clark on the DVD programme at all. There is a bit of footage with Brian May from the Rock Walk event in Los Angeles, California from 2002, where he mentions Steve.
"As you know they lost Steve Clark awhile later and Steve Clark
for God's sake; he's the originator of the riffs you know, he's the
lynch pin you know; he's one of the great writers and riff makers of our generation ..."
Thank you Brian May. And thanks to Val for typing this bit of info. The only other mentions of Steve are his name twice in bits of conversation, so basically there's nothing on Steve at all.
We are treated to a Pyromania era photo of the band on the back cover of the DVD case featuring Steve with his dazzling smile!
8th February 2004:

Here's what the Yahoo Movies page has to say about it: "Metal gods Def Leppard give you a night of hard rock in this program that includes behind the scenes footage, exclusive interviews and some never-before-seen footage. Hard-rocking metal kings at their best delivering all the goods their fans expect. "

4th January 2004:
While browsing the net via a google search I discovered an interview with Vance Wright of Disarray in which he states that Steve Clark was one of his musical influences. "When I was 13, Steve Clark from Def Leppard inspired me to pick up a guitar." To read the full article click here.
Gibson issued a press release at their website on Boxing Day (26th December 2003) announcing the re-launch of the cool "Dirty Fingers" pick-up. Steve had "Dirty Fingers" fitted into one of his custom built Les Pauls in the 80s. I believe it is the black 3-pick-up with cream trim and pick guard that he used on the Hysteria tour. Click here for the article.
27th December 2003:
The Band Photo Gallery has now been launched and is ready for your viewing pleasure. Lots of great live and off-stage photos of Steve with the other members of his band. Enjoy!
I hope you all had a great Christmas Day on the 25th. If you received any Steve or guitar related gifts, be sure to drop a note about them to us via email or at the message board here.
Look out for some more updates/news coming soon.

Visit www.rosshalfin.co.uk. Ross has added another page to his Def Leppard gallery featuring some black and white shots of the 87 Hysteria tour and previous tours. Some good photos featuring our man Steve and the band, not to mention a "naughty" photo of Mr Allen, LOL!
